Do you know your local "gangster"?

I remember a fuss in the local paper

St Ives is a market town, and less supervised than Huntingdon so tends to be more favourable if a couple of groups wished to "discuss matters"

This particular occasion there were two large groups who became violent and the Police were called

Local PC arrived, assessed situation, called for backup and took up a "watching" brief

Fifteen minutes later reinforcements arrived and sorted

Letters in local paper were demanding why the single PC had not stepped in to sort out 50 - 60 fighting yobs!

I think that the did the right thing, so did many others

We had a local one gunned down in the next village about 10-15 years ago. It's like Marple (Stockport) was the crime capital ! (easy google for you none locals).

Marple lives in St. Mary Mead, not Stockport.

Last time I felt the need to brag about being "connected" I was 17.
What sort of problem is the op envisaging that he'd need to "know a guy" to get it sorted?!
The local patriarch of the travelling community used to live over the road from me, and he'd tell a tale or two. I suppose he was the sort of person the op would be looking for, he passed away recently though, but I'm on friendly terms with his family so I guess that makes me ok.

Visiting a friend out of town, and he was telling me about a family of hard cases nearby. During the visit, we popped into a pub and non-locals certainly were not welcome, and it was tense to say the least. A kicking felt imminent.

One of the locals asked who we were as a prelude to an argument, so I told him I was visiting my family, and gave the name of the nutters. The atmosphere changed and the locals bought me beer as an apology.

I'd hate to meet people that generate that sort of reaction. I'm glad my bluff worked, and none of them were from that family.

I live in a typical Essex village. NB my mate was also beaten unconcious in this pub by a thuug who wanted to thump his Mother in Law ( she knocked his drink over accidentely and refused to buy him another) but his thug rules prevented this so he beat my mate up instead.
A couple of families here you just stay away from.

Is this the type of 'gangster' the OP is hoping to make friends with ? Sickening the sort of people that exist in this country/world.

There's a few who have replied to this thread who have gangster names:

No. I don't want to make friends with any 'gangsters'.

The point I was making in the OP is that where I used to live the local 'gangster' was well known. He and his mates didn't go around beating people up for the sake of it, or for spilled drinks, or anything like that. I never had cause to call on his services, but I was on first name terms and knew that if I had certain sorts of problems that the police would be unlikely to consider serious enough to commit manpower to then I would have been able to seek his help (as a few friends did over the years).

I'm thinking of things like a stolen bike, a minor burglary, or persistent anti-social behaviour from local youths. In the large village environment he would be able to identify the offenders and sort things out. I'm very definitely not talking about beatings and shootings, but his reputation meant that a word in the right people's ear would address these types of minor crime and result in property being returned, or anti-social behaviour stopping.

Many may disagree with me, but I do believe that in certain environments and situations this sort of person can play a useful role.

I will repeat, I am not talking about mindless thugs who will use violence at the drop of a hat, as if they enjoy it.

This is what David Cameron wanted in his 'bigger society' regime. As well as more curtain twitchers and snitches.
