No, no battery lights are a good deal - some are just less bad than others. If you really want battery lights, go German with Axa Greenline, Cateye GVolt or B+M's battery ranges, or the bargain option is K-marked lights for about £10 from Lidl and Aldi (not the rubbish they also sell to the UK) but that might not be offered again before spring.

Depends. For an all night ride these usb rechargeable lights don't have the necessary duration. (You could, I suppose, recharge them from a power pack but that's too much faffing for my liking.) So for a long ride in the dark I'd take a Hope Vision 1, a Smart rear and spare batteries 'just in case.' For a short commute or a 40minute ride back from the pub I love Lezyne USB rechargeables. I have the 400XL front (never bother with full power even on unlit country lanes) and the Zecto rear. Great lights for shorter durations.

Id agree about the Lezyne lights, I have an 1100xl but have never needed to run more than 400 lumens on my ride to work. They work well but I wouldn't think they'd last for an all night ride.

@al-fresco and @tallliman for a 1 hour commute each way (2 hours total per day) on generally well lit roads either the 600xl or 400xl and the zecto rear will be fine?

Thats a bargain for the 600XL combo, the front light is always just over £40 on its own. I have the 600Xl, loads of light even at the "standard" setting of 400 lumens, at that level I get just under 2hrs 30 mins

Assuming you don't use it on full power, I'd say you they'll be more than adequate. I use my 1100xl on 150lumens in lit areas with no issues

Depends. For an all night ride these usb rechargeable lights don't have the necessary duration. (You could, I suppose, recharge them from a power pack but that's too much faffing for my liking.)

It's also a rather long sit in the dark waiting for it to recharge unless you know it can charge while on, which many can't.

Things basically haven't moved on at all since 1W LED headlights and 12Wh rechargeable battery packs became available a few years ago, giving about 10 hours of good light. Some lights weigh less, but it mainly seems to be through use of smaller non-removable batteries giving shorter runtimes and overall lifetimes. They rarely cost less per hour runtime, so can any of these lights really be regarded as a bargain?

What about the cateye volt range? You can get extra battery packs you just screw in.

I have the 400 and it is bright enough for seeing where you are going on roads and dark shared paths

I mentioned in #11580 that the GVolt range is one of the better ones (it has a better lens than the Volt). Still not a bargain, though.

Illumination-wise they're more than sufficient. Endurance-wise you'll probably need to charge them up once a day and, personally, I'd carry a small rear light as a back-up.
