Never wear gloves unless it's really cold and wet. They make my hands sweaty and I like the feeling of being more "connected" to the bike by riding gloveless. I'll take the extremely small risk of injuring my hands in return for that
I used to wear them until my accident last summer.
Now here is an unexpected word of warning.
If you were cycling gloves make sure the fingers do not have a seam of material around the end of each finger. Mine did. When I came off in the summer and broke my little finger. It swelled up so quickly we could not get my glove off because of that seam at the end. We couldn't even tear it tear it open. It had to be cut off by the ambulance guys. We were getting concerned as the seam stopped the blood flow to the finger.
Get the gloves without the seams at the ends. Go and check your gloves.
The chance of it happening is slim but it can happen.
Always; even at 30°C + when in Oz. At the other extreme of -5°C I have a pair of "lobster claws" from Aldi which look a bit wierd but are very cosy in a UK winter! I have long since stopped worry about what others might think of my appearance!
