Sheffield copied the idea in 1858, when the rest of Yorkshire told them they'd better buck their ideas up and do something worthy of the county or they'd be transferred to Derbyshire.

The original “Tour of Rome” was at first a minor bike race, due to the fact that there were only 7 hills. However, it later expanded to become what we now know as the Giro D’Italia.

The “Tour of Yorkshire” was developed as an alternative to the “Tour of Rome” and the Giro, as there were several towns with 7 hills. While the Yorkshire event does not have the same status as the premium Italian event, it allows each bike team’s second-string riders to compete for the prized “Golden Black Pudding”.
