    Jockey Wheels

Having spent weeks trying to snag a jumping chain on my Steel road bike, I finally spotted that the jockey wheels on the 9 Speed Tiagra derailleur had lots of lateral play, espacially the one closest to the casette. Having given the chain plenty of attention to remedy stiff links, finding the...

B Tension Screw Adjustment - Which Gears Should I Be In?

I want to check the b tension screw on my mid 80s British Eagle MTB. It has 18 gears - 6 Uniglide rear and 3 elliptical Biopace chainrings. Which gears on the rear and the chainrings is it best to be in when checking and adjusting the b screw? Thanks for any advice.

sturmey archer gears not shifting smoothly

I am having trouble getting 3rd gear on my Brompton Sturmey Archer hub gear to engage properly. It does eventually engage, but only after a minute or two of clunking and slipping between gears 2 and 3. Is there an easy way of fixing this?

Remind me, what was wrong with friction lever gears.

Yesterday, I spent the day on a road bike with friction lever gears, and they worked perfectly. These are the gears I used for years and years in the 1980's with few problems, I enjoy the new(ish) style gear lever on the brakes, but please remind me, what was the problem with friction lever gears.

Lower gears - change cassette or inner chainring?

Hello All, I want to get lower gearing on my tourer. Not sure whether to go for a cassette with 36T lowest cog or an inner chainring, say, 24T, on the triple. Are there any mechanical issues that I should be aware of before buying? I.e., which route do you reckon would cause less set up...

    Shimano gears; stumped re problem.

Here's the background - the bike is a Specialized Secteur (2012) with Shimano Tiagra shifters, and a 9 speed cassette. It was running fine on the original rear mech (Tiagra medium cage) coupled with an 11/26 cassette (or something close to that - it's been binned). I decided I wanted a lower...

"How do you use the gears on a road bike?"

I was asked this today by a local guy who had just got a road bike, and to my shame, I really couldn't give him a simple answer. He said his gears were Shimano but, at the time, I was on my Campag Veloce bike so a demo would not have been entirely relevant. I think he really wanted to know...
