The River Aire in Leeds has just hit a third record high in as many hours.
And more heavy rain is predicted overnight.

Marlow, and many other bits of the Southeast, the Midlands and the Welsh marches, were very badly hit by flooding in the summer of 2007 - as were Sheffield and Hull. There was more flooding in bits of the Southeast a couple of years ago. The government rightly takes a strategic, nationwide view of flood defences - which is a world in which £8m doesn't go very far.

Best wishes to everyone affected, both during the disruption and for the cleanup. I hope your insurance companies respond quickly.
Yes, they were. The Southwest got badly hit first, and ministers made platitudes and hoped that insurance companies would respond quickly.

Then Buckinghamshire got hit, and ministers turned up in helicopters wearing hi-viz, promising relief money and going all statesmanlike for the TV cameras.

Funny, that. Not.

And it's still rising. 2.6m at 16:00

The Aire's still rising at 2.77m at 18:45. It's a foot above the highest recorded level. Upstream in Armley it's two and a half feet above the highest recorded level. There's still a fair bit of water to drain into the upper reaches of the river.

There's not many homes affected as most of the folk living riverside in the city centre live on the first floor of converted warehouses. The businesses and residents garages at ground floor level will have copped for the brunt of the destructive forces.

I just got a text from @dan_bo asking if I am ok, which was nice of him. I told him that I am visiting my family in Coventry for Christmas but that my home *should* be safe.

For reasons which will be explained a later date, I am no longer living in Hebden Bridge. I moved a few miles down the road to Todmorden last year. Unfortunately, Tod is also at risk of flooding and I think there will be flooding there today too. My new home is about 4 feet above the normal flood line, but I just looked at the environment agency warnings and my street *is* inside the area at risk. That implies that the agency thinks that flood waters might become deeper than 5 or 6 feet in the valley bottom, which would be horrendous for property owners there.

I have friends still living in Hebden Bridge who are also away until the NY. We think their homes might be affected so we are getting other friends to go and check.

Pretty grim all round. My thoughts are with all those affected, in Calderdale, Cumbria, and anywhere else.

From a purely selfish point of view, I could really do without coming back to a flood-damaged house. I had big plans for my 60th birthday and beyond. Still, what is, is, and I will deal with it when I get home.

PS It is nice of you all to ask after me. My sister just asked who I am typing this message to so I explained about the forum. She sends 'Likes' to all of you! :hello:

Glad to hear you are ok

I went down to Whalley this afternoon, The river and the surrounding area looked like a paddy field it was that widespread. To think it was only a few months ago when the Tour of Britain passed through the village on a beautiful sunny day.

It seems the weather gods are moving slowly around the country bestowing their blessings. I watched the Somerset Levels slowly disappear a couple of years ago, and even more slowly reappear. Hope everyone suffering the current inundations is looked after.

With the mother in law not well,we surprised her and spent Christmas Day with them. Our two stayed with the in laws,we stayed in a Prem Lodge. We set off home from Goosnargh about 16-15.This is my wifes report on the rest of the journey.

Mum& Dad's to Ours = 59 miles journey time 1.5 - 1.75 hours depending on traffic. Todays journey time 6.5 hours !!!! Got to Ilkley after carefully negotiating a few floods but then no further, all routes east closed so we eventually travel back via Settle to the M6 then M61, M60 M62 not a route I would recommend but at least we're home safe and sound and have had a lovely family Christmas. xx.

Six and a half hours, yet Ilkley is only a hop skip and jump away.Roads through Otley were shut,so we were sent up to the Cow and Calf road.Side roads breaking up and sending debris down into Ilkley,Water pouring into Ilkley town centre. Then disaster two cars get stuck in flood water,we all get sent back into Ilkley.Roads arew closed, instructions on where to go are offered by Officers, when you finally get there HGV's are turning round it is too dangerous to go any further,so the long way round is offered.Harrogate is a no,no.So we take off on our epic journey home.Every quick way home was shut down due to floods.

Ive been looking at all the previous posts, watching the news and hoping fervently that those of you in affected areas are safe. For what little good it may be,you are not forgotten here,by any means. This afternoon, sheltering from the usual and having a pint with friends,it was very noticeable how sombre was the mood. You could see people checking the news on their tablets, for we all have friends in areas affected, and there would be an exchange of news and the conversation would quieten. And then, someone who has been badly hit by our recent events said that he felt it would be better had we been flooded again, the damage is already done he said, that others should suffer so upset him.Had you been there, believe me,you would have seen grown men grip their glasses and look at the floor.,At which point Nigel, who owns the bar, announced that his other pub,The Shepherds at Melmerby(C2C-know it anyone?)was currently flooding. The mood was broken by a happy little group in assorted clothing, all"floodees". who told us that we were miseries, worse than a wet weekend etcThats not to be flippant, far from it,but I'm rather proud to be part of a community that has such spirit. If you or yours are flooded, you have it too,and my pals have asked me to say,you are in our thoughts:okay:

What i have noticed from the news is that alot of buildings that are flooded are very old and this type of flooding is very new . The EA need to look at what they are doing as what they are doing now just isn't working ! It's not freak weather its the EA cutting costs where its needed but then spending the money on crap ideas to cover their arses .
