The switch to natural gas from the North Sea led to the demise of gas fridges. Already facing declining sales due to the popularity of electric fridges, gas fridges' varying temperatures due to tidal effects was the final straw. I actually missed the second half of Scotland v Iran at the 1978 World Cup because our gas tv lost it's signal when the tide went out.
