I didn't link a cheap priced shoe as they all seem to be Karrimor types. As many of you'll know, Karrimor stuff was originally top quality stuff made here in Accrington, but Sports Direct took over the name and they ain't Karrimor anymore, apart from in name. I bought some of their walking shoes the other year. Within a few weeks of wear they were letting in water. The soles only lasted a few months after that.

It is difficult to recommend walking boots/shoes,like bike seats they are very individual.
If you have a Blacks outdoor local to you, they have a good range of walking boots or shoes.Staff are usually knowledgeable and can usually advise regarding usage.
Blacks can be a bit on the expensive side and you may be able to find the equivalent product at Mountain Warhouse or The Great Out Doors.
Regarding soles.Depth of the sole cleats is not an indication of grip,no matter how deep on smooth surfaces such as ice you will only get grip from some sort of a multi spiked attachment.I am not suggesting full blown crampons

Handy to know. I used to like Brashers.

My favourites are Keen - but very few places stock them (physically rather than via the internet).

I tend to get through a pair of walking shoes every 9-12 months and having wide feet (hence the love for Keen) means that replacing them tends to be expensive.

Agreed - they are very good esp' for the wider foot.

One of the Keen co-founders went off and founded Oboz:

I use these for my mountain activities and they are superb - high traction on slippery rock too:

That would far outlast the rest of my days, to be honest I would have done the same had I not found Grisport first.
I'm earnestly hoping I'll need to buy some more during my lifetime! It occurred to me on my dog walking this am that I was wearing Rohan walking boots (Brasher made) that are over a decade old, and their waterproof membrane has only just started to fail.

Gelert are as good as any for chep boots, though I think they're owned by Mike Ashley? Otherwise I only ever wore 5.11 boots in the Police, or Highlander for SAR.

TBH I think I'd be sceptical* of any product from a brand owned by him - Karrimor for instance used to be a great brand, but they all get "de-contented" to be able to sell at a particular price point by his organisation. A bit sad, really.

*I'm sure many items will be fine, though.

Sadly the greatness went out of Karrimor when the original factory shut down in 2004. I knew of quite a few who worked there part time, when we/they were school children.in the 1970's. The stuff was then regarded as top quality and sold around the world because of that tag. Here's some stuff i found about the place closing down and the affects on the town of Accrington.http://www.accringtonweb.com/forum/f69/karrimor-in-receivership-3287.html
This was the factory where the stuff was made.

We want everything cheap these days.
Then moan because it doesn't last.
Well I think it's perhaps a bit more complex than that, but you're right, there are those who want "premium" brands for buttons* and don't stop to think why it's selling for buttons...
If it looks too good to be true, then 999/1000 times it is.

*Legions of examples. Say TK Maxx, yes lots is overstock of regular lines, but even more lots is made (for cheap) for TK Maxx. Similarly at Bicester Village, and others.

If you want leather walking shoes, as opposed to boots, you won't go far wrong buying a pair of Brasher's.
Millet's are doing a good deal on them at the moment.
I've bought a pair of 'Country Roamers' for £99 - less another 10% for Caravan Club membership.
Should have bought a pair years ago as they are the most comfortable shoe I've ever worn. My missus had a pair at the same time and is in the same mind.
We do a lot of walking and have tried most of the boots at around the £100 - £120 mark over the years. The Brasher shoes are the best so far.
Whatever you buy, make sure they have a fit for purpose sole such as 'Vibram'. Anything less will beat your feet up on rough ground.

They are not the Brashers they were though, just imitation at an expensive price.

This is a Grisport and at £60ish damn good value.
I bought some decent Clarks walking boots off their website a few months ago. They're goretex and were about 50% off. Nice boots.
One of my favourite small boots that I've ever had was the clarks gortex ankle boots
Mine were about a £100 a few years ago, i must have walked my dog miles and miles in them.
The sole was smooth when i finally had to bin them.
