I didn't link a cheap priced shoe as they all seem to be Karrimor types. As many of you'll know, Karrimor stuff was originally top quality stuff made here in Accrington, but Sports Direct took over the name and they ain't Karrimor anymore, apart from in name. I bought some of their walking shoes the other year. Within a few weeks of wear they were letting in water. The soles only lasted a few months after that.
It is difficult to recommend walking boots/shoes,like bike seats they are very individual.
If you have a Blacks outdoor local to you, they have a good range of walking boots or shoes.Staff are usually knowledgeable and can usually advise regarding usage.
Blacks can be a bit on the expensive side and you may be able to find the equivalent product at Mountain Warhouse or The Great Out Doors.
Regarding soles.Depth of the sole cleats is not an indication of grip,no matter how deep on smooth surfaces such as ice you will only get grip from some sort of a multi spiked attachment.I am not suggesting full blown crampons
