No fettling but the Brompton has picked up a slow puncture so I popped into my LBS and bought a replacement Schwalbe tube. fortunately it’s the front wheel but still far too hot today so I’ll do it at a later date, getting a Marathon on and off a Brompton is one of those jobs you need to be in the mood for.

My right cleat position didn't feel ideal on yesterday's ride. I compared it to the left's position and it was slightly different so I just mirrored the left setup. I will see if it feels better later. (I am waiting for conditions to cool and the traffic to ease.)

Meanwhile, I have been adjusting the hinges on my back door. The door hadn't been opening and closing cleanly. It is fine now.

Bought 105 shifters from aliexpress, saved a ton, seem the genuine article. Plan to swap them on next rainy day.
Originals going onto my trainer bike, which has dodgy donor levers

Spent a couple hours today cleaning up this Dahon I picked up yesterday very cheap. Cleaned the bike completely and waxed. Removed chain and thoroughly cleaned it.
Made minor adjustments to various parts. It looks and rides like new.

Not familiar with that bike, looks to be edging into 'pedal forward' territory. Anyways, nice looking machine :okay:

I went out on my CAAD5 yesterday evening but only got a few hundred metres when I heard a loud ticking noise that sounded like a broken spoke slapping a chain stay. As I slowed down to investigate, the rear tyre went completely flat and the cause was obvious when I stopped. The spokes were fine, but I had picked up a nasty 'hitchhiker'...

(Damn Chrome browser just lost the rest of this post!!)

Ok, I will type it again!!

Tack in tyre.jpeg

I walked the bike home and switched bikes for the ride...

I just got to work on the repair and discovered that the culprit was bigger than I expected...

Culprit tack with coin for scale.jpeg

It is hard to imagine how it got into the tyre at the angle that it did!

The otherwise new tube only has one obvious hole in it but I decided not to patch it in case the tack had damaged the inside of it. I cut the tube in half in case I changed my mind later!

I have GP5000 tyres on order for the CAAD5 and they were supposed to be delivered by Royal Mail today but it is now gone 17:00 so it looks like that will probably happen tomorrow now...

Stuck mid-fettle! It's a pity because I was looking forward to testing the new tyres this evening. I will have to go out on the other bike again.

But the bad news is... For the first time in years, I have a really difficult tyre/rim combination!

I have been spoiled in recent times by such well-matched combinations that I have been able to fit and remove tyres without needing levers. These tyres with my Campagnolo Neutrons are NOT like that! I am struggling at home now when I am rested. I am not looking forward to potentially having to do this 100 km into a super-hilly Pennine ride!

Hopefully, I won't damage my nice new tubes in the process.

I will be back later to throw my toys out of the pram!!

As I‘m using my Brompton pretty much daily, I thought that I should sort out the slow puncture, In the end all straightforward, once the replacement tube was fitted, the Marathon played ball and slipped back on the rim with a bit of massaging.

I didn’t manage to find the source of the puncture, nothing sharp in the tyre so may have been a faulty valve.

Or maybe not!

My fingers couldn't get the tyres on and I hate using tyre levers to do it since I have damaged too many tubes that way in the past. I reverted to my 'shoe and wheel lever' technique - a foot wearing a stiff-soled cycling shoe pressed down the rim's braking surface to push against the bead of the tyre. The top of the rim is then pushed down towards the ground, effectively making it a 70 cm lever. It provides lots of leverage on the bead without risking pinching the tube. I then go all the way round both sides of the tyre to confirm that the tube is not trapped by the bead anywhere.

I also did the same for the front wheel, so I now have nice new tyres front and rear.

The rims are only 18 mm wide so the nominal 28 mm wide tyres only measure 26 mm when fitted. I noticed that with the old tyres too.

I put 6.5 bar (94 psi) in the rear and 6.0 bar (87 psi) in the front. I will do a test ride now and see how I get on with those pressures.

The spouse struggled with the Brooks grips (the ones with the leather "disks") on her bike. I swapped them for a pair of cork grips and noticed that the fastening screw of the thumb shifter was too long. With a little help from my friend, the hacksaw, the screw is short enough now.
My spouse tried the new grips and likes them much more than the Brooks grips.
