Oooh. I missed this thread.

This won't be news to some people, but I read that some competitive MTBers deliberately run short chains on the basis that they know they will avoid the bigger combinations, and they know the risks they're running - the benefit being they're less likely to unship the chain. I found that an interesting snippet of info. (If it's true mind, I just read it somewhere)

SRAM advertise (at least some of) their groupsets as giving 20 useable gears. So these, at least are designed to be used this way. It may increase wear a bit, but it's not outside the design parameters.

Cross chaining of a 5-speed freewheel and a triple many have been a terrible idea, but cross chaining on a modern 2x10 is no big deal. Not something I plan to do when I set out, but not something I stress about if it happens, I just correct it at the next opportunity. A bit like leaving your fly undone.

No help when the chain is on bike already.
And I know how to fit a new chain, and this wouldn't have been it.
I was asking if people thought it would be ok to run like this and not if it was the best set up.
