Hi there, so, I've bought a used bike and I've noticed the chain is making a rubbing noise, the gears are indexed and change fine so I know the noise isn't coming from there, I've inspect the jockey wheels & cage up close, there is a little metal tab on the cage of the jockey wheels and I think...

    Chainrings and chain length

Evening all. I currently have a semi compact chain set 52/36 which I would like to swap temporarily for 50/34 ( a hilly ride coming up) Would I get away with keeping the chain at the same length or would I need to shorten it and if so by how many links? Your advice would be much appreciated.

SRAM GPX to Shimano Ultegra Chain set

I am trying to build up a Trek Madone 3.5 OCLV frame set and I would like to change the existing SRAM GPX CS to a Shimano Ultegra CS but the problem I have is that the existing bottom bracket looks to me as though its a push fit rather than their version of a Shimano Hollowtech. So what I...

    Chain tool query.

Morning all, just a quick query re: chain tool compatability. Are chain tools suitable for all speed chains or does an eleven speed require a particular tool? I assume the pin size on the tool needs to match the pin in the chain or at least be fractionally smaller. Thanks. Gez

    Chain Lube Oil Comparison Test

Came across this test done some 7 years ago and surprised by the results. Interesting read. Pretty much what @Yellow Saddle had said (I hope I got this right ). The damage done is quite interesting. Purple Extreme's description of their product does not bear resemblance to the test. Now where...

How many chain links longer for long cage 105 derailleur?

Hi My bike came with short cage 105 derailleur Early on, while trying to fix an issue (noisy drivetrain), LBS replaced it for long cage one, because that's all they had in, I think. But they didn't lengthen the chain. There was enough slack in the chain that they didn't need to, apparently. So...

    Removing chain for cleaning?

Hi, Just wondered how many of you remove your chains for de-greasing? I have a KMC split link/power link chain on both my bikes and was bought a set of those Park Tools pliers for Christmas so thought I'd give them a go today. They certainly make splitting and re-joining the chain a doddle...

    Chain Stay Paint Chips

Hello, after only 3 rides of my brand new Wilier road bike, I've already noticed 3 paint chips on my chain stay. It looks like the chain has been slapping against it. (In fact the chain is surprisingly close to the chain stay on the Gran Turismo model.) I'm a bit surprised and disappointed...

Brompton 1 speed and 2 speed chain tensioners

Does anyone know if there is any difference other than flanged pulley wheels (2 speed) and unflanged (1 speed)? Except for the sliding flanged pulleys they seem identical, which would indicated that if pulleys were replaced on a 1 speed it would work for a 2 speed given that the other necessary...

I have summat a bit like this: that I use, or rather hope to use, to see how my chain's getting along. However, how do I use it? Do I insert both prongs into the chain simultaneously (i.e. the shorter distance) or do I insert the RHS prong first and then lower the LHS (i.e. measuring a...

Chain rests on chainring teeth when in extreme gears

HELP! :banghead: On the way into work yesterday my chain started dropping repeatedly.
